Shading & highlights tutorial plus freebie work along & examples included (cu ok)

Description

Mary had a follow-up question from the last tutorial I did for her so I thought I would hurry and get this one out for her in case she wanted to try this out this weekend.

She wanted to know how I did my highlights and shading on their own layers. One of my teachers was adamant about us not using the dodge and burn tool because they destroy pixels so she taught us to do the shading and highlights using shapes & gaussian blur. We also had to listen to her drone on about the importance of noticing highlights and shading and where the light source was coming from. I wanted to fall asleep in that class a lot. I have to admit though, something must have sunk in because I realized I am always noticing the light source, harsh and soft highlights and shadows. This tutorial will show you how I do the shading on their own layers rather than use the dodge/burn.

I hope this tutorial is helpful and you like it.

Hugs
